What is the microbiome?

You might have heard us talking about the microbiome a lot in relation to our products. We’re here to explain a little more about what this is.

Quick biology lesson for you! Your body is a giant ecosystem of living organisms, on and inside it. These organisms, (bacteria, viruses, and other tiny things you need a microscope to see), form what's known as the microbiome.

Your microbiome lives in your gut, mouth and skin, so things like diet, hygiene and medications can affect it.

The microbiome plays an essential part in keeping you healthy. It’s the skin's protective shield that protects against the environment around you, disease-causing bacteria and fungi. Your gut also has a microbiome, and there’s a deep relationship between the two – i.e. if you eat well and your gut’s happy, your skin is more likely to be too!

If we’re talking about the layers of the skin, think of the microbiome as your body's first line of defence against skin infections. Like guardians that might repel invaders. That’s why it’s good to know how to take care of it. When changes to your skin happen or in some cases you get redness, sensitivity and spots, it’s your body’s way of telling you that something is up with your microbiome.

Then comes the skin barrier – this is like the gatekeeper that keeps moisture in and harmful things out. Aka the protective walls and doors of the ‘house’ aka your skin.

When the microbiome and skin barrier (the guardians and the gatekeeper) are strong and happy, the skin stays calm and protected.
